Christ Jesus

WHO IS HE?

WHAT DOES HE DO?

When we meet another person, two questions often come to mind: "Who is he?" and "What does she do?" As we look into the Bible and learn about Jesus, we can also ask these same questions.

WHO IS HE?

"In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God." John 1:1

In the Bible Jesus has been given many names and titles. One of them is The Word. Read John 1:1 to get answers to these questions:

1.       Since when has Jesus existed?

2.       Who is He equivalent to?

So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. (John 1:14)

3.       What did Jesus become?

"That is why we have a great High Priest who has gone to heaven, Jesus the Son of God. Let us cling to him and never stop trusting him. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin." Hebrews 4:14, 15

4.       Jesus, our High Priest, was tempted to sin in every way as we are. Did He sin?

Jesus said, "Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don't you believe me?" John 8:46

5.       What did Jesus challenge the people to prove?

Some speak of Jesus as a great man. To some He was the founder of a new religion. Others consider Him a prophet. But Jesus Himself claimed that He was God. If this was not true, He could not even be called a good man, but would be the greatest liar.

Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn't get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "My son, your sins are forgiven." But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there said to themselves, "What? This is blasphemy! Who but God can forgive sins!" Jesus knew what they were discussing among themselves, so he said to them, "Why do you think this is blasphemy? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven' or 'Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'? I will prove that I, the Son of Man, have the authority on earth to forgive sins." Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, "Stand up, take your mat, and go on home, because you are healed!" The man jumped up, took the mat, and pushed his way through the stunned onlookers. Then they all praised God. "We've never seen anything like this before!" they exclaimed. (Mark 2:3-12)

Read the above story in Mark 2. Jesus showed His power by healing a paralysed man.

6.       What was it that He claimed He could do?

7.       How does this show that Jesus is God?

8.       In what ways do the following verses demonstrate that Jesus is God?

Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.  Suddenly, a terrible storm came up, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went to him and woke him up, shouting, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" And Jesus answered, "Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!" Then he stood up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly all was calm. The disciples just sat there in awe. "Who is this?" they asked themselves. "Even the wind and waves obey him!" (Matthew 8:23-27)

Jesus could: _______________________________________________________________

Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth." (Matthew 28:18)

Jesus was given: ___________________________________________________________

And again Jesus was deeply troubled. Then they came to the grave. It was a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. "Roll the stone aside," Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, said, "Lord, by now the smell will be terrible because he has been dead for four days." Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that you will see God's glory if you believe?" So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so they will believe you sent me." Then Jesus shouted, "Lazarus, come out!" And Lazarus came out, bound in grave clothes, his face wrapped in a head cloth. Jesus told them, "Unwrap him and let him go!" Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.(John 11:38-45)

Jesus was able to do what? ___________________________________________________

Think about it: what mere human could control weather, oceans, and speak life into a dead corpse? Only the God who created it all has the authority and ability to do such things.

WHAT DID HE DO?

Jesus also suffered when he died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners that he might bring us safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. (1 Peter 3:18)

9.     For WHAT did Jesus die?

10.   For WHOM did Jesus die?

11.   Why did He die?

He personally carried away our sins in his own body on the cross so we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. You have been healed by his wounds! (1 Peter 2:24)

12.   What did Jesus do on the cross for us?

1 Very early on Sunday morning the women came to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 They found that the stone covering the entrance had been rolled aside. 3 So they went in, but they couldn't find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 They were puzzled, trying to think what could have happened to it. Suddenly, two men appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. 5 The women were terrified and bowed low before them. Then the men asked, "Why are you looking in a tomb for someone who is alive? 6 He isn't here! He has risen from the dead! Don't you remember what he told you back in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again the third day?" (Luke 24:1-7)

13.   Read Luke 24:1-7. In verse 5-6 what were the women told about Jesus?

3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me -- that Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, as the Scriptures said. 5 He was seen by Peter and then by the twelve apostles. 6 After that, he was seen by more than five hundred of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died by now. 7 Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. (1 Corinthians 15:3-7)

14.   To whom did Jesus appear after He was raised to life?

If Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless, and you are still under condemnation for your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:17)

The fact that Jesus rose from the dead (His resurrection) is very important. Give two reasons why this is so:

15.    Your faith is ____________________________

16.    You are still under _________________________ for your ___________,

And Jesus Christ our Lord was shown to be the Son of God when God powerfully raised him from the dead by means of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 1:4)

17.   By being raised from the dead Jesus was shown to be ______________________.

It was not long after he said this that he was taken up into the sky while they were watching, and he disappeared into a cloud. (Acts 1:9)

18.   What happened to Jesus as the disciples watched?

Jesus said, "There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly." (John 14:2)

19.    Now that Jesus is in heaven, what is He doing for those who believe?

20.    Look over what you have studied. Summarise what you have learned about Jesus?
